The Smelling Recorder!
Building on the idea of once-impossible things becoming commonplace, let's consider another example.
At one time, we could not record images or photographs. It was impossible. Today, not only can we record images, we can also record film and video.
Similarly, at one time, we could not record sound or music. Also impossible. Today, all of us can record sound with our phones and instantly stream any kind of music or conversation we record.
Recording images and sound were both once impossible. Today, both are so ordinary we take them entirely for granted.
This leads to an interesting question: what is stopping us from recording smell?
Imagine the best smell you have ever smelled: fresh flowers, oven-baked cookies, the irreplaceable scent of someone you love deeply. Now imagine being able to replay those smells whenever you want.
If you are asking what is stopping us from doing this right now, you are asking exactly the right questions.
Recording and playing back smells is not beyond us. It is only as seemingly impossible as recording sound and video once were.
Since it was a kid who discovered television, maybe it will be a kid who discovers smell-o-vision.
What you're looking at is a smelling machine. It's impossible. Right?
